  HOT ON HER TRAIL

Jessie listened to the sounds of happiness coming from inside the big, log home and wished she could be a part of it. Pressing her face to the glass window like a child at a candy store, she watched the one they called Jacob as he quietly surveyed the celebration. He was the reason that she was here. She watched him smile at something one of his brothers said; and Jessie couldn’t help it, she smiled with him. He had the kindest face.

After he had almost spotted her at the Little League concession stand, she had hung back and watched him work with the children. He was patient and gentle; working with the little boys as if they were his own.

  But they weren’t.

If he could be so loving with someone else’s child; how would he be with one of his own? Undoubtedly, he would love his son or daughter more than life itself. What a wonderful thought! Jessie hugged herself, imagining a scene where a little sable-haired boy is swept up into his daddy’s strong arms. Two pairs of dark blue eyes would turn to look at her; and Jacob would hold out his hand, inviting her to come close and share a kiss. After indulging herself for a moment, Jessie shook the notion from her head; such magical musings were not for her.

That first night at the ball park, Jessie had watched him leave alone. When he had returned the next night, she hadn’t even hesitated. Stowing away in the back of his truck, she had left her old life behind; knowing that wherever he went, was where she longed to be.

Jessie laughed at her impossible dream. Who was she kidding? She was only here to check him out; to make sure that the man who had fathered her child was a good man. After what she had been through, she had to be certain. For two days, she had hidden away in his barn. Like a lonely ghost, she had observed him from a distance; content just to be near him. After watching him interact with family and friends, Jessie knew that even if she had been given an option, she couldn't have chosen better. Jacob McCoy was perfect.

The pancakes that the family were eating smelled heavenly. Jessie held on to her empty stomach as it seemed to growl loud enough for the McCoy’s to hear inside of their warm, safe home. Most of the ketchup and bread was gone, so she was on short rations. Jessie wasn’t stealing; she made sure that she did work every day to pay for the food that she ate. No one had noticed yet, but she was cleaning the tack and mucking the stalls. Most likely, each one of the men would think that one of the others was doing the chores. Nevertheless, it made Jessie feel better.

Taking one last look at the happy family, she sighed. Something wonderful had happened – she could tell by all of their smiles and laughter. For a few minutes, she took it in; imagining she was part of the family. The beautiful girl was so lucky. She was loved by all six of the men – and Jessie had no one. Cradling her abdomen, she took comfort in the knowledge that she would not always be alone.

Sadly, she backed away to return to the barn. Slipping off the front porch, she thought that this would be a good time to take a dip in the stock tank and freshen up. Everyone was safely occupied and there would be little chance that she would get caught. Hurrying across the side yard, she carefully opened the barn door. The horses were getting used to her. She had made sure to pet each one, even slipping them some of the nuggets that were stored in the feed bin. Now they looked at her expectantly, but none set off any type of alarm.

She had claimed the last stall on the right to sleep in; the one next to the big Palomino. Speaking to the golden horse, she shed her outer clothes and folded them neatly in the corner. Having only a few pieces of clothing with her forced her to keep everything neat. “Thanks for the use of your blanket, gorgeous.” The horse met her gaze, looking at her as if he understood every word. Wrapping the old, plaid blanket around herself, Jessie stole away to bathe.

Nathan was so relieved that Libby and Aron had gotten together. He might only be thirteen years old, but he wasn’t stupid. He had seen their engagement coming a mile away. And now, Libby was pregnant. There was going to be an actual, little-bitty human coming to live on Tebow. For the first time, he wouldn’t be the baby of the family. So, gosh-darn-it, it was high time they quit treating him like one. Like now. Noah had lost his cell-phone out of his truck and he had been given the thankless job of backtracking all over the place to hunt it. Making his way to the corral, Nathan passed close to the stock tank. Hearing a splash, he almost jumped out of his skin. Slipping around, Nathan was determined to catch the intruder. Easing close, he stood on tip-toe and what he saw made him gasp. To a thirteen year old – long hair and glistening water on a near naked female could only mean one thing.

Turning to run, he began to holler. “Guys, guys – come quick!” Of course, no one could hear him – except Jessie – who quickly scrambled to get out of the tank. Racing back to the house, he threw open the kitchen door and found Jacob in the midst of kitchen duty.

“Hey, what’s wrong with you? You know you’re not supposed to slam the door, and look at the mud that you’re tracking in on Libby’s clean floor.” Nathan was panting, and more excited than Jacob could remember seeing him.

“Jacob, come quick!” He tried to pull his brother to the door.

“Why? Is the barn on fire?” Jacob knew how boys could flip out over the least little thing.

“No, you’ve gotta come see.” Nathan was insistent.

“See what, buddy?” Nathan’s enthusiasm was contagious.

“You just won’t believe it!” At Jacob’s stern expression – Nathan held open the door and motioned for his brother to follow him with a pleading look on his face. “You’ve got to see this, Jacob. It’s better than the time Isaac found that two-headed snake.”

“If you don’t just spit it out, I’m going to ground you from your Wii.”

Nathan wasn’t worried; he knew Jacob’s bark was worse than his bite. “For God’s sake, Jacob. I’ve been trying to tell you! There’s a mermaid in the stock tank!”

“Well, you’re right.” Jacob followed his brother out the door. “This, I’ve got to see.”

The stock tank was huge, as stock tanks go. It held about twenty thousand gallons, as much as a swimming pool. It wasn't the type of tank that cattle or horses walked up to and drank from. It was the type that collected rain water, so it was available for the windmill and for the smaller tanks that dotted the various pastures. The McCoy’s irrigated some of their crops during the dryer weeks of the summer. All of the tanks were connected by pipes and run by a mammoth engine that was contained in the back part of the barn. The McCoy brothers and the
ir friends had loved to swim in the tank; it made an enjoyable haven on a hot day.

Jacob folded his arms and tried not to smile as Nathan mumbled. “I don’t know where she went. She was right there, I swear.”

“It could have been some kids from one of the neighboring farms stealing a swim. You probably saw Haley Morrison. She kinda likes you, doesn’t she? I bet she snuck over here to see if she could get a glimpse of you, Nate-my-man.” Jacob knew that Nate was just old enough to start noticing girls. What Jacob said embarrassed his little brother. In just seconds, his face was flushed red with the idea that a girl might have a crush on him.

“It wasn’t Haley, Jacob.” Nathan insisted. “This girl, mermaid or not, had bosoms.” Nathan held his hands out in front of his chest, measuring for Jacob the bountifulness of the mermaid’s blessings.

“Hmmm,” Jacob bit his cheek to keep from laughing. “I see what you mean.”

“And her bottom was all round and curvy; and she was shaped like this.” Nathan cut a classic hour glass figure through the air. At this, Jacob lost it.

“You looked at her pretty close, didn’t you? Did you happen to see a tail?” It felt good to laugh. The past couple of days had been fraught with tension. What with Joseph being paralyzed and Libby’s medical scare, they all felt like they had been put through the ringer.

“Yeah, she had a really nice tail.” Nathan was measuring in the air again – rounded circles – innocent in his appreciation of the female form.

“No, no – bud, I meant a fish tail.” This gave Nathan pause, and he put a finger to his chin in deep thought.

“Shucks! I guess she was just a regular ole’ girl. I don’t remember a tail.”

Jessie watched from the corner of the barn and almost laughed out loud. Jacob loved his brother, Nathan. Seeing their fondness for one another made her feel so much better. Jacob would never think of asking her to get an abortion. Now, all she had to do was get his promise that he wouldn’t try and take the baby from her.

When Jessie had found out that the real father of her baby was a rich man, she had been concerned. Jacob’s family was powerful, with countless resources. How would they react when they found out that a nobody was about to give birth to a McCoy?

So, Jessie had devised a plan. She would introduce herself to Jacob and explain the situation, making sure that he understood that she wasn’t asking or expecting any type of support for their child. What Jessie truly wanted from Jacob was his assurance that he wouldn’t challenge Jessie for custody.

So, today was the day. She was going to get dressed and march over to the main house and meet her baby’s daddy. She could see it now, 'Hello, Jacob. You don't know me, but I'm pregnant with your child.' Good Grief! He was going to think that she was a crazy woman.

The letter from the Cryobank should be arriving soon. The director of the Sperm Bank had told her that it was their legal obligation to inform Mr. McCoy of the mistake that had been made with his sperm deposit. Mistake. She didn't like to think of her baby as a mistake. Her child would know that it was loved, Jessie would make sure of that. Tentatively, her plans were to find a job and stay in Kerrville, close to Jacob. That way he would know that she was willing for him to be as much, or as little, a part of their baby's life as he wanted to be. And if, for some reason, they made him uncomfortable – she could move on – knowing that she had done right by Jacob McCoy.

After sending Nathan on his way, Jacob decided to check around the place – just in case. It probably was neighborhood kids, but there was no use taking a chance. The barn was a likely place to start. Silently he opened the door, allowing time for his eyesight to adjust to the dimmer light. Listening, all he heard was the snickering of the horses as they welcomed him. All of the spoiled animals were hoping that he had brought a few carrots, or maybe, an apple. Jacob had a soft heart for children, old people, and animals. Easing in, he looked around all the heavy equipment, checked behind hay bales and in the several storage rooms and feed bins. Nothing. Climbing the ladder, he scoped out the hayloft. Nothing. Finally, he made his way to the wing of the barn where the stables were built that housed their personal mounts. Humming? Did he hear humming?

Jessie dried off quickly, using an old towel that she had found in the upstairs apartment. As she rubbed herself down, she hummed an old Elvis tune, ‘Can‘t Help Falling In Love'. “Wise men say, only fools rush in – but I can’t help falling in love with you.” Any time she was lonely or depressed, singing one of the King’s songs always lifted her spirits.

Hanging the towel over one of the empty stall doors, she promised herself that she would take it back upstairs and slip it into the laundry hamper. The second floor apartment was special. Jessie had respected the space. It was, obviously, an artist’s studio. There were several beautiful pieces of sculpture in various states of completion – an eagle perched majestically on a jagged rock, a bear standing up-right in a ferocious stance, and an Indian warrior in full battle regalia. Jessie had refrained from touching them, but she had studied them with great admiration. With a wishful glance around the comfortable room; she had resisted the big, soft bed and had only taken a small amount of food from the little frig to tide her over.

Collecting her clothes, she stood in front of the big golden horse’s stall while she prepared to dress. “I’ve enjoyed our time together, beautiful.” The stallion made a little snort of answer, causing Jessie to giggle. “You are the best roommate anybody could ask for.” Jessie leaned over and kissed the horse on the nose. “If I ever have a home of my own, or a place for me and my baby to belong, I hope I can have a horse as sweet as you.”

Jacob was speechless. There was an absolutely beautiful, nude girl standing in front of Palladin’s stall. He couldn’t quite hear what she was saying, but he could see enough to fall deeply in lust. His eyes roved over the most curvy, gorgeous backside he had ever been privileged to ogle. Inflating with desire, his cock began to thicken and grow. Her long, dark brown hair hung in damp curls and tendrils to the middle of her back. She was small, but preciously rounded. A perfect heart-shaped ass made his hips want to pump forward. Jacob knew that the gentlemanly thing to do would be to back up and quietly leave. But, he couldn’t. He was afraid that she would disappear before he got a chance to see her face.

‘Look at me, baby,‘ he whispered under his breath. Yes! He was one lucky son-of-a-bitch. His wish was granted. Palladin sensed his presence and nickered a loud greeting.

That equine hello caused the bare-naked angel to whirl around and face him. Before Jacob could string words together, the little doll crossed her arms over the most perfect breasts that God had ever created. They were full, round and had large peach colored nipples that tilted upward as if seeking his attention. He licked his lips in anticipation of sucking on those swollen nubbins till she creamed.

  They both froze.

  She stared at him.

He ate her up with his eyes.

Jacob took one step forward, “God, you’re exquisite, baby.”

A scream from the porch of the main house broke the spell.

“Jacob! Jacob! Help us! Please hurry!” It was Libby. Something must be wrong with Joseph. Jacob took one last look at the erotic vision before him, and begged. “Don’t go, little Mermaid. Please, stay. I’ll be right back. I promise.” She never said a word; just looked at him with an odd yearning in her eyes. Shit! He had to go. Leaving her standing there was one of the hardest things he had ever done.

Rushing across the yard, he took the four steps up onto the verandah in two bounds. Throwing open the door, he dreaded what he would find. Hurrying through the house, he knocked over a dining room chair in his haste to get to the new wing they had built to give Joseph a place to rehabilitate.

“I’m so sorry, Joseph.” Libby was crying. “I shouldn’t have left you. Please forgive me.” He found his brother sprawled on the carpet with Libby kneeling next to him. The tremendous sadness in his eyes ripped a hole in Jacob’s heart. Even i
n his abject misery, Joseph showed concern for the weeping girl.

“Don’t cry Libby. It wasn’t your fault. You just went to check on lunch. I could have waited. I shouldn’t have tried to do it by myself.” Jacob placed his hands on Joseph’s back and under his arm, ready to pick up his brother. Libby went to aid him.

“No, Libby. You’re pregnant. You don’t need to be lifting anything heavier than a sandwich,” Jacob admonished her. With ease, he lifted Joseph from the floor and settled him into his chair.

“Thank you,” Joseph murmured, avoiding his brother’s eyes.

“Libby, honey – go check your food and give us a couple of minutes. Okay?” Jacob winked at Libby, letting her know that he just wanted to spend a few minutes with his brother. He waited until he could hear Libby moving around the kitchen. “So, what happened?”

“Hell, Jacob! I used to jump out of airplanes; I have to find my excitement where I can these days.” Joseph’s poor attempt at humor didn’t elicit a laugh from Jacob. Using his strong shoulder and arm muscles, Joseph steered his chair over to the double picture window. He pulled back the curtain and looked out over Tebow land. “Do you know what I was doing when I fell?” At Jacob’s soft negative answer, Joseph continued. “I wanted to come to the window to see outside. Isn’t that a hoot? I thought I could do it myself.” Jacob laid his hand on Joseph’s arm, lending wordless support. “I just wanted to look out the fuckin’ window!”

Jacob had seen her naked! She was absolutely mortified! True, he hadn't run away screaming, but he was probably too polite to let his true reaction show. Oh, why couldn’t she be willowy and graceful? She had way too many curves to ever be considered attractive.
